His international average stands at an impressive near-40, with six half-centuries already to his name. However, he remains unable to break into the England side in any other format, which is understandable given his modest career record for Notts. Indeed, across all three formats, his numbers show little sign of being those of a strong international batsman. Sometimes, though, you have to go with a gut feeling, and if I was a selector, my gut feeling would be that Alex Hales would certainly not let England down in the upcoming ODIs.

Unfortunately, though, we have seen the last of Alex Hales in England kit for this summer. He now heads back to Nottinghamshire, where he hopes to put a distinctly mediocre start to the season behind him, and to make a case for a Lions berth this winter. He has the talent, he has the temperament - I think that all Alex Hales need to flourish is some responsibility.
